With President Trump yet to respond, the Russian foreign ministry called for calm. "We will provide updates as necessary", she said.

"They only understand one thing!"

"Vladimir Putin said the worldwide society should avoid being overwhelmed by emotion, it should act calmly and prudently".

The timing of Sunday's nuclear test indeed appears an act of spite against Beijing.

Hours later, after attending church in Washington, the president made his "We'll see" comment in response to a question from reporters.

The proximity of South Korean capital Seoul meant the North "could basically vaporise" large parts of the country's population even with conventional weapons, he warned. It said the action by North Korea was against the objective of the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said he spoke to Trump about the missile test on Sunday, and called for an additional round of sanctions on North Korea. It's unclear what kind of penalties might make a difference.

"I sincerely hope that this will serve as the final wake-up call to the global community to outlaw all nuclear testing by bringing the CTBT into force", said Lassina Zerbo, head of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organisation.

Other cabinet officials indicated that the U.S. would continue increasing diplomatic pressure on North Korea to relinquish its nuclear program, a goal that has eluded United States leaders for decades, but has grown increasingly important following the country's escalating missile and weapons tests.

Sunday's test comes nearly one year after Pyongyang's fifth nuclear test last September, which triggered a 5.3-magnitude seismological event.

Onodera said data from the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, which estimated the magnitude of the shaking as 5.8, suggested the bomb had a yield of around 70 kilotons.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog called North Korea's nuclear program a "grave concern" after the nation, to which the agency's experts have no access, conducted its sixth nuclear test since 2006.

"North Korea is a rogue nation which has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success", Trump said in a second tweet.

China, North Korea's only major ally, said North Korea "has ignored the worldwide community's widespread opposition, again carrying out a nuclear test".

Trump was hardly alone as leaders around the world condemned the nuclear test.

Trump's unsent letter to Comey is now in Mueller's hands
That investigation, which had been overseen by Comey, is also looking into the financial dealings of several Trump associates. After FBI Director James Comey was sacked , the White House gave conflicting explanations as to why.

The TV announcement - accompanied by patriotic music and images of North Korean landscape and military hardware - said the test had been ordered by the country's leader, Kim Jong-un.

The news report claimed the weapon was created to fit atop an intercontinental ballistic missile. David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, said it was safe to assume that the high yield of test "would likely require thermonuclear material in the device".

Nuclear tests are crucial to perfecting sophisticated technologies and to demonstrating to the world that claims of nuclear prowess are not merely a bluff.

Pyongyang said it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb that could be loaded on to a long-range missile.

There was no immediate independent confirmation of the North's claim. As well as being the first nuclear test since the USA president came to power in January, it has also sparked reports of an quake that suggest a much larger weapon than previous tests.

At the same time, the simple power of the blast was convincing.

For the first time, North Korea also specifically mentioned the possibility of a electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, attack.

What does the test tell us?

China hates nuclear tests on its border the way the United States hates an intercontinental ballistic missile test that could potentially reach the USA mainland.

Pyongyang could launch another ICBM in the next few months, Cha said. The North regularly threatens to destroy the South and its main ally, the United States.

"I don't think that it's been helpful", Castro said.

"Referring to tens to hundreds of kilotons, it doesn't appear to be talking about a fully fledged H-bomb". Norsar, a Norwegian natural disaster monitoring agency, estimated the yield at 120 kilotons, significantly above the 15 kiloton "Little Boy" bomb dropped on Hiroshima and the 20 kiloton "Fat Man" dropped on Nagasaki at the end of the Second World War.

North Korea's recent activity has been especially bold.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un receives a briefing on the plan for a missile strike near Guam. Kim signed off on the plan, but is watching the moves by the USA before deciding when or whether to carry it out. The U.S. on Thursday had sent the bombers and F-35 stealth fighters to the sky over South Korea in a show of force - and North Korea strongly protested.
