Net Neutrality Debate: FCC Gets 22 Million Comments, Many From Bots

Apple is, at the very least, in good company, as a staggering 98.5% of all comments to the FCC were in favour of maintaining the United States' current strong net neutrality rules. Apple has opposed loosening net neutrality restrictions, allowing Internet Service Providers (ISPs) unbound power to charge companies for speedier access to consumers. Internet service providers, on the other hand, have said that by exploring new business models, consumers could be better served - and carriers would find new ways of making money at a time when most Americans are already paying for Internet service.

Evan Greer, campaign director for Fight for the Future, said: "The unprecedented number of comments in the FCC docket underscores what everyone already knows: people freakin' love the free and open internet and are willing to fight tooth and nail to defend it".

Under the current net neutrality rules, it is illegal for companies to offer a high-speed lane to corporations able to pay more or to effectively slow a rival service. But the FCC extended the deadline by two weeks to August 30, partially granting a request for an eight-week extension from net neutrality advocates.

Katrina Vanden Heuvel: Against Trump, Republicans are all talk and no action
In a Fox News poll, 44 percent approved of Trump's handling of the storm compared to 26 percent who disapproved. This means that offshore profit shifting by corporations would reap even greater savings than it does now.

Comcast regulatory chief David Cohen urged Congress to step in and end what he described as a "Groundhog Day" being played out by FCC in regard to net neutrality regulation.

"Our deep respect for our customers' security, privacy, and control over personal information extends to our customers' broadband connectivity choices", wrote Cynthia Hogan, Apple's vice president of public policy in the Americas. Many comments are apparently from spam bots and form letters, but Chairman Ajit Pai's proposal to undo net neutrality rules has received massive attention. This means that many consumers can not switch providers even if they learn that their broadband provider interferes with the internet's openness in a way that they oppose. However, Apple has said that it has no problem trying out alternative sources of legal authority, as long as, the body provides legally sustainable, enforceable and strong protections. That's one of the key provisions the FCC now uses to enforce net neutrality.

That really dives into one of the main problems with Pai's suggestion for how to make the open internet work.
