  • In Gee Chun had seven birdies and a single bogey in her first round of the Cambria Portland Classic

She announced the day before the tournament started that she would donate her winnings from the week to the relief effort.

Stacy Lewis completed one of the most emotional victories in recent memory on the LPGA Tour when she held off a charging In Gee Chun to win the Cambia Portland Classic at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon.

Lewis played brilliant, inspired golf breaking through to end her three-year winless spell.

Hurricane Harvey has killed around 50 people and unleashed massive flooding that damaged up to 50,000 homes in Houston. A trio of golfers are just two shots back heading into the weekend including Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Ai Miyazato - who is playing in her final LPGA Tour event on U.S. soil prior to retiring, and Moriya Jutanugarn. She hit a good lag putt and when the three-footer that was left went in, Lewis had won and the money was going to Houston.

"I wrote down a 2 on the scorecard before she even hit her putt because I knew she was going to make it", Lewis said. Her husband, Gerrod Chadwell, is the women's golf coach at the University of Houston. "I've been really positive about my game and trying to enjoy it as much as I can out there". She proceeded to win the event and the $195,000 prize that goes with it.

Hundreds of homes were evacuated Friday and Saturday morning, and one home was destroyed Saturday before noon in the Tujunga area. In Glendale, mandatory evacuations were issued for Glenoaks and Mountain Oaks, with a voluntary order in place for Whiting Woods.

Lewis has come close to victory any number of times since that 2014 win in Arkansas, achingly close 12 times, to be precise.

'What we're going to be able to do, we're going to be able to help people rebuild houses and get their homes back. Annika Sorenstam had a chance in 2004 for a third straight at Columbia Edgewater, but she finished two shots behind Hee-Won Han. Chun missed a short birdie putt at the par-4 14th, and pulled to within a stroke with a 45-foot birdie at the par-3 16th. Her previous best in 2017 was a tie for 16th at the LOTTE Championship presented by Hershey, and now, she said, she's eager to play on bigger stages - including the Evian Championship, the LPGA Tour's final major of 2017.

But for it to actually happen after dropping from World No. 1 to No. 18 and not pulling off a victory in three years?

Lewis' bid to finish high up the pecking order is on track so far after an eight under round of 64 saw her occupy the joint top position on the leaderboard at the halfway stage. "It's nice to see yourself do that again".
