When it came to big plays, the Terrapins made a lot while the Longhorns couldn't seem to find a rhythm all game long. Maryland led 27-7 in the second quarter, then had to hold off a furious Texas rally to snap a 17-game losing streak to ranked opponents.

"It's a breakthrough for the program". Pigrome was 9 of 12 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns and ran 11 times for 64 yards and a touchdown.

The Longhorns scored three non-offensive touchdowns: an interception return and blocked field-goal return by Holton Hill and a 91-yard punt return by Reggie Hemphill-Mapps. But those highlights couldn't deliver a win for Herman.

The Texas defense gave up almost 500 yards of offense to Maryland, with Terps quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome accounting for 175 yards passing with two touchdowns and 64 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The sophomore turned a Buechele interception into a five-play scoring drive, and his touchdown pass capped a three-play, 74-yard drive. "If we all thought that we were going to come in here and in nine months, sprinkle some fairy dust on this team and think that we've arrived, then we're wrong".

Maryland: The Terps pounded Texas on the line of scrimmage and rolled up 263 yards rushing. Texas scored a late touchdown to make the final look a little more respectable. Pigrome kept the Longhorns off balance with his runs and confident throws.

The No. 23 ranking for a Texas team that hasn't won much lately wasn't a wise move for the media voters in The Associated Press poll.

Maryland took a 30-14 lead into halftime after a 26-yard field goal by Greene with 2:37 left in the half.

After DKR Memorial Stadium lost its mind, the Longhorns defense stood up on the second drive and forced Maryland into a punt.

"Why can't we get out of our own way?"

Ty Johnson added 132 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for the Terrapins, who outgained Texas 482-473 despite running just 58 plays to 84 for the Longhorns. That led to a Terrapins touchdown drive sparked by a big 40-yard pass on third-and-19 and a horsecollar tackle penalty by Naashon Hughes. Herman had called the group a surprise of training camp.

"I told our guys never to get used to this feeling", a subdued Herman said afterward.

"We're our own worst enemy right now", Herman said, later adding, "The execution and just the self-inflicted wounds at just the most inopportune time are things that are hard to recover from, if not impossible".

Texas will fall from the rankings when the new AP Top 25 is released Tuesday. They likely won't come back for a while.

Just minutes after taking the field for the very first time under Herman, the Horns stuffed the talented Maryland rushing attack on the first two running plays of the season.

It was a wild game.

Maryland: The Terrapins host Towson on September 9. The Texas coaching staff must fix huge issues that carried over from Charlie Strong's teams.
