Nuclear-armed North Korea has warned Tokyo against "imminent self-destruction" for siding with Washington, as tensions soar after Pyongyang fired a missile over Japan.

This might have been Kim's plan all along as he sought what to do next after North Korea's weapons development reached a point where it could test intercontinental ballistic missiles meant to reach deep into the US mainland.

The missile, launched at the Sunan airfield in Pyongyang on Tuesday morning overflew the northern territory of Japan and splashed into nearby waters.

In a report to the National Assembly, the ministry said the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile was sacked at a "normal" angle but at half range.

Meeting late on Tuesday in NY, the council called the launch "outrageous", demanding North Korea cease all missile testing.

Wang reiterated China's position of placing importance on dialogue with North Korea, the ministry said.

The US must make it clear that it will deploy a decisively destructive nuclear option to strike North Korea - one capable of effectively destroying the country.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the IRBM test a "reckless and provocative act" while President Donald Trump said it demonstrated that negotiations with Pyongyang were "not the answer".

It is easy for the U.S. and North Korea to posture and threaten - for North Korea to carry out nuclear and missile tests and for the U.S. to conduct B-1B bomber and F-35 flights and military exercises.

US Navy Shoots Down Medium-Range Missile Off Hawaii in Test
The ground-based interceptor system was designed mainly to counter a North Korean missile threat, a US official said at the time. The Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai launched the target missile late Tuesday.

With tensions surging, Moscow urged Washington not to use force against North Korea and also said attempts to toughen sanctions would be counterproductive.

The planned joint US and South Korean response has been named OPLAN 5015.

North Korea has said its firing of a missile over Japan on Tuesday was "the first step" of military operations in the Pacific.

Pyongyang's testing of nuclear and ballistic missile technology is banned by the United Nations and is the subject of multiple worldwide sanctions.

"We're never out of diplomatic solutions".

Kim Jong Un said his nation has drawn a lesson "again that it should show action, not talk, to the USA imprudently denying the (North's) initiative measure for easing the extreme tension" and stressed that it will continue to watch America's demeanor toward the North and decide its future actions accordingly.

"I agree with the president..."

Before Tuesday's launch, it appeared North Korea was backing away from its threat to fire missiles toward Guam.

North Korean state media this week also repeated threats to the US Pacific island of Guam, which it called "an advanced base of invasion".
