But for this to happen, United Nations inspectors must believe such checks necessary.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal last month - the full transcript of which was published by Politico - President Trump said he did not believe Iran would be found to be in compliance with the agreement.

In April, he ordered a review of whether a suspension of nuclear sanctions on Iran was in the USA interest. "That is a problem".

Even if Iran accepts such inspections, it is bound to demand stringent concessions.

But they said Washington has not provided such indications to back up its pressure on the IAEA to make such a request.

The State Department's praise for the IAEA was at odds with a statement from U.S. envoy to the UN Nikki Haley, who bashed Iran for its support of the Palestinian group Hamas and seemed to question whether the agency was being aggressive enough in seeking out sensitive sites in Iran to inspect.

@iaeaorg Trump is behaving like a third world despot in his efforts to undermine the #Iran nuclear deal.

In light of ongoing diplomatic strife between Washington and Tehran, IAEA Director-General Yukiya Amano reiterated that agency's work was based on facts alone.

Uranium enriched to a grade of under 5 percent of purity is considered suitable for civilian nuclear energy, while weapons-grade uranium requires enrichment of around 90 percent. Iran will never allow such visits. But it must present a basis for those concerns.

IAEA monitors Iran's compliance via site visits, remote monitoring, containment seals, and satellite imagery.

"Almost any other USA administration would have a very hard time shrugging off the data provided by the IAEA since it's such a trusted source", said Colin Kahl, a former deputy assistant to Obama.

The IAEA's latest report said Iran's stock of low-enriched uranium did not surpass 661 pounds, the quota assigned by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), according to Agence France-Presse.

"The report reveals that U.S. officials' rhetoric and media hype has not impacted its verification activities and reporting on the case", continued the official stressing that Iran and all member states expect the agency's secretariat to keep up its professional job impartially. Trump has said he thinks by then Washington will declare Iran to be non-compliant - a stance at odds with that of the other five world powers including US allies in Europe.

"The Americans will take their dream of visiting our military and sensitive sites to their graves".

But critics see the push for further inspections as an attempt to politicize the agency's work and potentially force Iran to withdraw from the deal.

Five votes are needed for a majority, which could comprise the United States and its Western allies.

That process and wording have yet to be put to the test.

Trump has twice verified Iran's commitment to the deal in reports submitted to Congress.

A second IAEA official also said, "We just don't want to give them an excuse to" bring down the accord.
