Putin said that the situation in the Korean peninsula has deteriorated beyond anyone's imagination and things could get worse.

In an article sent to the media, President Putin said: "Russia believes that the policy of putting pressure on Pyongyang to stop its nuclear missile programme is misguided and futile".

The article was shared days ahead of Putin's trip to China for the BRICS summit, which brings together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

It is the latest in a series of strongly-worded threats from Donald Trump, who warned that North Korea would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if they continuing to threaten the US.

"It is essential to resolve the region's problems through direct dialogue involving all sides without advancing any preconditions (for such talks)", Putin, whose country shares a border with North Korea, wrote on the Kremlin's web site.

In Seoul, a senior South Korean official also urged Pyongyang on Friday to return to the negotiating table, while warning against "continuing provocations".

The agency added that the United States and South Korea were "taken aback" by North Korea's recent missile launch, the country's "first military operation in the Pacific".
