Hurricane Irma became the second major hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thursday, as the storm rapidly intensified to a Category 3 hurricane over the course of the afternoon. Hurricane Irma is now a powerful major hurricane just one day after becoming a tropical storm.

The center of Irma is located about 720 miles to the west of the Cabo Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph.

NHC officials expect Hurricane Irma to continue with its current motion through Friday with a slight shift westward into Saturday.

The wave is located just west of the Cabo Verde islands moving west, northwest to westward at 15 miles per hour.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday Irma had sustained winds of 115 miles per hour with higher gusts.

SCENARIO 1 - OUT TO SEA: This scenario is supported by the American or "GFS" forecast model and suggests that Irma will curve into the open Atlantic Ocean well away from the United States coastline.

"The hurricane likely to turn westward and west-southwestward over the next few days due to a building ridge over the central Atlantic", said Blake.

While it is still too soon to guarantee a direct strike, residents of the Lesser Antilles should follow the progress of Irma closely.

This is the first time the name Irma has been used for an Atlantic tropical storm or hurricane.

Kottlowski said lots of atmospheric factors will come into play during the next week to determine the path of Hurricane Irma.
