The West Nile Virus, a disease that's been in Utah since 2003, has been found in 74 mosquito pools across the state as of August 5 - with 48 of the pools in the Salt Lake Valley. Again he advised that people can freely get engaged in outdoor activities but they should ensure that they take necessary precautionary measures to avoid any mosquito bite, for example, keeping an insect repellent with them. Older adults and persons with weakened immune systems and/or other chronic illnesses are at the greatest risk for severe illness.

"For the vast majority of people, even those that are exposed to the West Nile Virus, they won't have any symptoms what so ever", said Hausbeck.

So far this season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 45 states and the District of Columbia have seen either human, mosquito, or avian cases of West Nile virus, including 190 cases of neuroinvasive disease and 124 cases of non-neuroinvasive disease.

The best way for people to protect themselves against West Nile is to minimize their risk of mosquito bites by doing things like wearing light-coloured clothing and long-sleeved shirts, and using mosquito repellents containing DEET or icaridin. The study authors noted a correlation with the 3- to 14-day incubation period for West Nile virus, and that the increase in the number of cases occurred despite the population loss from the extensive migration of local residents relocating away from flooded and damaged areas. A few people might develop severe symptoms in which hospitalization is required.

Mild illness may include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting diarrhea, or rash. Hot weather, abandoned swimming pools and standing water create ideal conditions for the development of mosquitoes and the subsequent spread of the virus.

Most people who become infected with WNV will not develop any symptoms of illness. If you're out and about - especially in wooded areas or the mountains - it's important to wear long sleeves, long trousers and bug spray to stay safe. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.

Be sure that window and door screens are tight fitting and in good fix.
