  • Brexit Secretary David Davis arrived in Brussels today prepared to deliver a hard-hitting message about what Britain sees as needless delays

The UK has asked for more Brexit negotiating sessions with its European counterparts, according to a person familiar with the discussions, as the latest round of talks showed little sign of progress amid public criticism from each side.

The divorce bill has become a major sticking point in negotiations between Britain and the EU.

He claims official papers setting out the UK Government's positions were not satisfactory and it was "crystal clear" there is a lot of work to be done before talks on a future trade deal could begin.

"For him to suggest, with more than a week of negotiations still to take place, that sufficient progress will not have been made by October to allow talks to begin on Britain's future relationship with the European Union, is premature and way beyond his pay grade".

Junker said the United Kingdom "hesitates showing all its cards" but said "none" of the government's position papers was "satisfactory".

"We'll see where we get to on Thursday, but we believe we're in a good position, and would like to move on to discuss our future relationship".

The European Commission didn't seem to think at first that the so-called "Brexit bill" would be much of an issue. During his speech, the EC's president also said that the decision to finally end Ankara's European Union entry attempts depends entirely on Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

In what appears a tactical move rather a change of policy, Labour said it would keep Britain in the European single market and customs union for a transitional period after Brexit, offering an alternative to the Conservative government's line.

"There are 60 wars underway in the world, but not a single one on Europe's territory, if we don't count Ukraine".

The set to leave the EU in March 2019 after the majority of the British voted in favor of the country leaving the union via a referendum previous year.

Brexit Secretary David Davis is in Brussels today for more talks - and has repeatedly called for them to be more flexible.

"I would like to be clear that I did read with the requisite attention all the papers produced by Her Majesty's government, and none of those is actually satisfactory", Mr Juncker said.

There will be two more rounds of negotiations in September and October before March 2019 when the Brexit deadline will be due. In December, EU member states agreed that no new accession chapters would be opened until Ankara reversed course.
