House Dems urge Trump to reconsider military transgender ban

The announcement comes just days after President Donald Trump signed a memo directing the Pentagon to bar transgender people from entering the US military and directing Mattis to decide how to handle active-duty transgender troops.

As for transgender individuals now serving, an official would not outline the "factors" that Mattis could use to come up with that policy in the next six months, leaving open the possibility that some transgender service members could keep their jobs.

The US official added that for now, the current policy in respect to transgenders serving in the military remains in effect.

Mattis says he's delaying implementation of the order until military experts weigh in on the issue since most experts agree that the ban would be a bad idea.

Gay and lesbian troops were allowed to openly serve in 2011, and transgender individuals were granted the same right in 2016, under former Defense Secretary Ash Carter. What is actually going on with the transgender military ban?

That is up from 32 per cent in February but well below the 41.5 per cent her party won in the last election in 2013. Germany and France have tried to convince both sides to implement the Minsk deal, but with little success so far.

A highly cited RAND Corporation study previously concluded that transgender troops bring a negligible effect to the USA military in both combat readiness and military spending. A seemingly routine statement from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

How many transgender service members are in the military? To that end, I will establish a panel of experts serving within the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to provide advice and recommendations on the implementation of the president's direction.

The White House had said that transgender people would be allowed to continue serving until Mattis had completed such an analysis. This plan will advise "as to what steps are appropriate and consistent with military effectiveness and lethality, budgetary constraints, and applicable law" regarding transgender troops in the military. First, the ban portion of the memo addresses only "accession", or initial enlistment, of openly transgender persons. Mattis postponed that deadline in June, and Trump tweeted about his plans in late July. In a landmark moment for the LGBTQ community, transgender service members were encouraged to be open about their gender identities while serving, without the fear of discharge.

Trump signed a memo on Friday that would implement his ban, which would take effect on March 23, 2018. However, a quick scan of the numbers (and a study by the RAND group) shows that at most trans service people cost the military $8.4 million dollars a year in medical costs.

Elsewhere, Lambda Legal has teamed up with OutServe-SLDN to file a second lawsuit in Seattle on behalf of an Army staff sergeant and two young trans people who wish to join the military.
