Villeneuve said that when he first saw Ridley Scott's original "Blade Runner", released in 1982, he could "immediately recognize its impact on the cinematic world", adding that now he has been given the fantastic opportunity to continue the story.

Over the past week, fans have been treated with short clips on the official Blade Runner 2049 social media accounts, which show Wallace's rise to power two decades before the events of the new film; he took over the Tyrell Corporation in 2028. But five years before that in 2023, an indefinite "prohibition" had been imposed on the making of replicants, which Wallace looked to change.

Either way, we know the timelines is just a filler to ease us into what we really want - which is to watch Blade Runner 2049 which sees Harrison Ford continue his run of revisiting the best characters of his career.

Collider debuted first of these shorts, entitled "2036: Nexus Dawn".

In 30 years a lot has happened in the world of Blade Runner. As the title suggests, the film is set in 2036, halfway between the first film and 2049. Wallace introduces a new line of "perfected" replicants called the Nexus 9, who are seeking the repeal of the prohibition on replicants.

Set thirty years after the events of the first film, "Blade Runner 2049" follows a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling), who unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos.

Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Ana de Armas, David Benson and Barkhad Abdi also star in the film which is directed by Denis Villeneuve.

The film will find a new Blade Runner, played by Ryan Gosling, tracking down Harrison Ford's Deckard.
