Bawana bypoll: AAP candidate takes crucial lead over Cong, BJP

  • The results will decide the fate of candidates of the three major political parties-the ruling AAP the BJP and the Congress-all of whom have exuded confidence about winning the seat

In interior Valpoi, Vishwajit Rane won on a BJP ticket with a 10,087 vote margin against Roy Naik, son of former Congress chief Minister Ravi Naik. As a result, the party candidate Ved Prakash, an AAP turncoat, could not put up an effective fight.

The Bawana by-election was seen as a crucial test of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP's popularity especially after receiving several setbacks since it swept the Delhi assembly elections in 2015.

Ram Chandra got 59,886 votes against 35,834 votes of Ved Prakash. The polling percentage remained low with only 45 per cent people turning up to cast their votes.

"In the 2014 general elections, Congress had polled 19,089 votes in Bawana Assembly segment with a vote share of 11.26 per cent".

In the final tally AAP has retained the seat as its sitting MLA had quit party and joined BJP which necessitated the bi-election.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked party's MP from Northwest Delhi, Udit Raj, to look into the reasons behind the BJP candidate's defeat in the Bawana assembly bypoll in Delhi. Kejriwal paid the price of calling Modi names in public ever since the Chief Minister began accusing BJP of trying to create fissures in his party by trying to lure its members away and creating controversies that AAP has found itself surrounded by since it won 67 out of 70 seats in 2015. In Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam Party candidate Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy secured a victory in the Nandyal by-polls with 27,456 votes. After trailing in the initial stages, Mr Chander surged ahead in the subsequent rounds.

The by-election was held because Ved Prakash had to resign as a legislator after shifting to the BJP.

In the 2015 Assembly election, the AAP candidate had received more than 1 lakh votes to win the Bawana seat with a margin of 50,000 votes.

The electoral fate of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who contested the assembly by-election from Panaji, is also to be decided. In the previous five elections, the Congress had struggled to go over even 5,000 votes.

Expected as it was, the BJP won both the seats. Nagi Reddy, who crossed over to the TDP previous year, died in April, causing the vacancy.

Defeating the chief minister in a constituency that has remained saffron - though not always with significant vote margins - for nearly a quarter century was always going to be a tough prospect for the Congress.
