  • Her party's support dropped as a consequence and led to a surge in support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany party which pollsters say could win up to 10 percent in the September election

More than a million people from across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East entered Germany two years ago when Mrs Merkel opened her country's doors to Syrian refugees.

In a separate TV appearance, the chancellor dodged a question about her main rival.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday called for an extension of European Union border controls in the passport-free Schengen area beyond a planned end in November.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that Europe still "hasn't done its homework" on long-term solutions to the flow of migrants to the continent.

However, she admitted that European Union law at the time had been inadequate for dealing with the enormous refugee influx that ensued. Merkel, who is seeking a fourth term as Germany's chancellor in the September 24 election, is often confronted by angry protesters during campaign speeches and the latest happened for a second time in less than a week.

That is up from 32 per cent in February but well below the 41.5 per cent her party won in the last election in 2013.

The army and the Myanmar's civilian government have vehemently deny allegations of widespread abuses including rapes and murders. VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis is decrying persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and praying they receive "full rights".

Despite surging in the polls, the German leader faces some serious public backlash on her campaign trail.

"The first name of the girl is Angela; the second is Merkel".

German Government spokesman Steffen Seibert said the new agreement will provide Egypt with more resources to help people find better jobs and study in Germany.

She said that any mistakes in her handling of the refugee crisis came before 2015 when Germany opened its doors, arguing that policy had "placed too much on the Dublin system in the past, which has overburdened countries such as Italy and Greece". On Saturday, a crowd of protesters was yelling and whistling at her during the 30-minute speech in Quedlinburg, a town in Saxony-Anhalt.

Germany and France have tried to convince both sides to implement the Minsk deal, but with little success so far. Her voter outreach in northwestern German city of Bergisch-Gladbach last week, did not go well either as hundreds of angry protesters whistled and chanted the AfD slogan "Merkel must go".

In Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the chancellor - whose conservative bloc holds a lead of some 15 percentage points over the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) - left no doubt that this would not happen as long as she is CDU party chief.
