On its official Twitter account, the Lions said the deal runs through 2022. Should he win another Super Bowl between now and 2019, he might just end up as the NFL's first $200 million player. Before this contract, Stafford was making an average of $17.7 million per year under a previous extension signed with the team in 2013.

ESPN reported the contract included a signing bonus of $50 million and $92 million in guaranteed payments beyond that.

The Packers quarterback said in June he's not anxious about getting a new contract, saying it would take care of itself.

NAFTA negotiations: Donald Trump considers terminating deal
The three countries will hold a five-day round of negotiations on first September to rewrite the 23-year-old agreement. Despite the president's reputation for shooting from the hip, Taylor said his remarks need to be taken seriously.

The Lions will counter with the argument of quality quarterbacks are hard to find and with the market value of top-tier quarterbacks escalating rapidly, they probably consider the deal with Stafford a bargain. However, the Lions lost to the Seattle Seahawks, 26-6, in the Wild Card game after Stafford completed just 18 of 32 attempts for 205 yards with no touchdowns. The Georgia alum threw for 24 touchdowns, 4,327 yards, 10 interceptions and a 65.3 completion percentage a season ago leading the Lions to his third playoffs.

After two injury-filled seasons to start his career, Stafford has started every game for Detroit since 2011, compiling a 51-58 record during that stretch. He went on to lose the last three games of the season to finish 9-7.

It may not be fair to pin the franchise's success or failure on Stafford alone, but that's the plight of an National Football League quarterback these days, and Stafford, at age 29, is more than capable of uplifting his team in the prime of his career. Stafford alone accounts for about 12 percent of the Lions' entire salary cap.
