With their initial cash bid for Sanchez turned down, City are expected to return with an improved offer for the forward, who is now in Chile for Thursday's World Cup qualifier with Paraguay.

The Chile worldwide hit 24 Premier League goals for Arsene Wenger's side last season but is out of contract next summer and is yet to agree a new contract at Emirates Stadium. But given the contract situation, which could leave Arsenal with nothing should Sanchez stay and then leave next summer on a free transfer, it remains to be seen if manager Arsene Wenger can hold firm on his refusal to sell.

The England worldwide, 22, is understood to be bemused at the decision after scoring twice in City's opening three Premier League matches but is open to moving back to London, where he began his career playing for QPR's youth team before moving to Anfield.

Manchester City are keen to snap up Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal before Thursday's summer transfer deadline, according to The Mirror on Tuesday.

However, any deal could leave Raheem Sterling's future at City in doubt.

Alexis Sanchez is not willing to extend his deal with Arsenal.

Sanchez joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2014 for a fee of around £35m and won his second FA Cup with the Gunners last season. Another player who could potentially be involved in any deal, this is what one source is telling us, is Sergio Aguero.

The Chilean worldwide made his season debut for Arsenal on Sunday, and he was hardly a factor in the 4-0 demolition the team suffered at the hands of Liverpool.

The Daily Telegraph claims that City have offered a contract worth £325,000 a week and the 28-year-old has accepted the deal.
