Her death brings to 16 the number of people killed when Islamist militants struck in the city and the nearby town of Cambrils.

"This morning a 51-year-old German woman died after being treated in a critical condition in hospital", said a statement from the region's civil defence.

One of the suspects involved in the Barcelona attacks was found dead in a auto three kilometers from where police officers tried to stop him by firing at the vehicle he was in.

However, with the end of the hunt for the assailants this week, both sides are shifting the blame on what could have been done to prevent the attacks ahead of a Catalan independence referendum scheduled on October 1. The attacker, Younes Abouyaaqoub, was shot dead five days later by police west of Barcelona. The van driver then stabbed another man to death in a carjacking to make his getaway.

Eight suspects are dead, two are jailed under preliminary charges and two more remain under investigation. An investigation into the cell's possible worldwide links is ongoing.

Hundreds of thousands of peace marchers flooded the heart of Barcelona on Saturday shouting "I'm not afraid" - a public rejection of violence following extremist attacks that killed 15 people, Spain's deadliest in more than a decade.

"People occasionally confuse the faithful of a religion with a person who becomes psychotic with the idea of killing people, but it is a mistake very dangerous", said a protester Portuguese 18 years of age, Ana Francisca Ramos, a student of medicine came as a tourist to Barcelona.

Spanish King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attended the protest, which was also a show of Barcelona's unity and cultural diversity.

The Spanish premier said Friday the king would be attending the march to demonstrate "his love for the people of Barcelona, of Cambrils, of Catalonia".

The march was led by police and members of the emergency services, as well as taxi drivers who had helped evacuate people at the time of the attack.
