  • Apple Is Pulling Apps By Iranian Developers From The App Store To Comply With US Sanctions

According to official reports by Apple and information provided by some domestic sources, the company has shut down some of the popular applications developed by Iranians on App Store due to the United States sanctions.

Salehi-Isfahani said there has already been much uncertainty about foreign investment, and Apple's removal of Iranian apps could be a sign that the company believes the accord may be in jeopardy.

Translation: 11 percent of the cellphone market in Iran belongs to Apple. Nor has it kept Iranian app developers from creating thousands of apps for local users and offering them through App Stores outside Iran.

The apps which initially were removed were Delion (food delivery service), DigiKala (retailer), AloPeyk (parcel delivery service), Takhfifan (group buying website), and Alibaba (online travel agency).

But developers of apps like Iran's Uber-like Snapp, which was taken down this week, were recently sent a message from Apple saying, "Under the US sanctions regulations, the App Store can not host, distribute or do business with apps or developers connected to certain USA embargoed countries".

Apple's recent action can be seen as an extension of its earlier efforts when it restricted the Iranian apps with in-app transactions, citing non-compliance with the Iranian Transactions Sanctions Regulations.

Currency strategists were forecasting the USA dollar to regain some strength in the second half of this year, however. That's because the president can't just erase the 1994 NAFTA Implementation Act passed by Congress.

Google does not appear to have undertaken a similar campaign against apps in its Play Store. "If the existing restrictions shift, we encourage you to resubmit your app for inclusion on the App Store". The apps were deemed illegal by the Chinese government, and Apple consequently removed them, seeking to maintain a good relationship with what has become the world's largest market for iOS apps.

"Giving respect to consumer rights is a principle today which Apple has not followed", Jahromi tweeted.

Snapp was one of the apps the New York Times said was removed from the App Store.

"As a USA company, we remain committed to full compliance with USA export controls and sanctions", a Google spokesperson said.

"We are unable to include your app on the App Store". Facebook and YouTube are blocked by the Iranian government as well. USA legislation passed earlier this month imposed mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.
