  • Peter Madsen's private submarine sits on a pier in Copenhagen's harbor. Danish police have identified a headless limbless torso that washed ashore Monday as that of Kim Wall the journalist who joined Madsen on his sub earlier this month to rep

Madsen initially told police he had let Wall off the submarine on an island.

A photo of Swedish journalist Kim Wall who was aboard a submarine "UC3 Nautilus" before it sank.

Wall wasn't a household name in Sweden, in part because she mostly wrote for English-language publications, Moreno said, but she was an experienced reporter and her family is well known in media circles.

Whatever the events leading up to Kim Wall's death, her original story on Madsen the maverick inventor and his creation will now never appear. But who is Peter Madsen?

The freelance journalist had met with Madsen to interview him for a feature story she was writing.

The police report that the head, arms, and legs had been deliberately cut off the torso, but Madsen's lawyer said that her client continues to claim he is innocent and that Wall died in an accident on board that sub, according to BBC News.

Copenhagen police confirmed on Wednesday that Wall is believed to have died on an amateur-built submarine that sank by eccentric inventor, Peter Madsen. No cause of death has been announced.

The discovery of a journalist's headless torso in Copenhagen has prompted police to take a fresh look at an unsolved case from 30 years ago. No definitive timeline of events or details of the accident have been released to the public.

US Navy 'to sack' Joseph Aucoin, Seventh Fleet commander
The 7th Fleet said divers will continue to search flooded compartments inside the ship, where some remains have been found . An operational pause has been ordered by the United States navy worldwide to give its fleets time to assess safety.

He was rescued a day after his UC3 Nautilus sank. Police have said that they believe the submarine was deliberately sunk. With 18 meters long, it was at the time the largest private submarine in the world. It is thanks to Mr Isbak that police were able to find the exact location of the wrecked submarine.

The inventor was charged with manslaughter on August 11 and ordered to be held in custody for 24 days. If convicted, he faces "a range of penalties from 5 years of imprisonment until life imprisonment", according to local police.

Wall's former classmates at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in NY held a candlelight vigil Wednesday in her memory.

She admitted that she didn't know Wall very well, but she said the two interacted a lot during their time together at Columbia. "She was someone who set the standard in terms of reporting not only on China but also on social justice".

DNA from the torso matched that found on Wall's hairbrush and tootbrush.

The family said Kim Wall "found and told stories from different parts of the globe, stories that have to be written", ranging from the Haitian natural disaster to ousted dictator Idi Amin's torture chamber in Uganda and mine fields in Sri Lanka.

Wall had covered news about earthquake-hit areas in Haiti, Idi Amin's torture chambers in Uganda and minefields in Sri Lanka. She gave voice to the weak, vulnerable and marginalised people.

Meanwhile Madsen is sticking with his story that he buried Wall at sea, after she had unexpectedly passed away in his submarine.
