DOJ Narrows Disrupt J20 Warrant, Asks Court to Enforce

  • Trump's administration demands the IP details to everyone who visited an anti Trump website

The Justice Department amended a request for information about an anti-Trump website that prosecutors allege was behind destructive Inauguration Day protests, attempting to address concerns that the records demand was sweeping and unconstitutional.

So, they went ahead with the warrant and requested all information relating to the website, including details of its owners and IP logs of millions of visitors.

He further stressed that the government wasn't targeting the First Amendment rights of political dissidents who casually visited the site, but was only looking for the select group involved in "the criminal act".

While the DoJ has narrowed its request for information, it still wants the search warrant carried out and will keep pushing through the courts to get it. DreamHost is happy with a narrowed request but notes that "there are still a few issues that we consider to be problematic for a number of reasons". "This Warrant has nothing to do with that right", wrote Phillips.

The website in question is www.disruptj20.org, which was used to organise demonstrations and protests on the 20th January during Trump's inauguration.

Missouri governor halts execution amid DNA exoneration claim
Gayle was brutally murdered in her own home , where she was stabbed 43 times with a butcher's knife, court records show. Louis suburb of University City, Missouri, on August 11, 1998, looking for a house to break into and chose Gayle's.

DreamHost says it views the move as "a huge win for internet privacy, and we absolutely appreciate the DOJ's willingness to look at and reconsider both the scope and the depth of their original request for records".

Prosecutors also mention in the reply brief that they would be willing to ask for a more limited disclosure from DreamHost, the company that hosted the website at the center of the case.

A request sent to DreamHost for comment was not immediately returned. More fundamentally, DOJ is still investigating a website that was dedicated to organizing and planning political dissent and protest.

In the brief, DOJ substantially reduces the amount of information it is seeking. Another hearing on the matter is scheduled for Thursday in Washington DC.

However, Aghaian said DreamHost would press forward with other legal challenges to the warrant, which he said continued to present privacy and constitutional issues. Chris Ghazarian, general counsel for DreamHost, called the warrant "pure prosecutorial overreach by a highly politicized department of justice" and argued that allowing the government to obtain such information would have a chilling effect on Americans' freedom of association. Despite its new limits, the warrant is still looking for info about political protests, and it seems the DoJ and DreamHost don't see eye-to-eye on the Constitutionality of that search.
