  • 27 arrests at Boston rallies, Trump applauds people for 'speaking out' against hate

Thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-Nazi slogans converged Saturday morning on downtown Boston, dwarfing a smaller group of conservatives staging their own "free speech rally".

The protests were contentious but lacked the same level of violence demonstrated in Charlottesville after riot police dispersed the rally.

Officials estimated a turnout of 40,000 demonstrators.

Boston police say 27 arrests were made during the conservative activist rally and counterdemonstration on Boston Common.

"It's time to do something", said Katie Zipps, who travelled from Malden, north of Boston, for the counter-demonstration.

President Donald Trump applauded the people in Boston who he said were "speaking out" against bigotry and hate.

Trump adds in a Twitter message that "Our country will soon come together as one!"

The Boston Free Speech Coalition, which organised the event, said it had nothing to do with white nationalism or racism, and added that its group is not affiliated with the Charlottesville rally organisers in any way. Most arrests were for charges of disorderly conduct, with a few battery and assault charges.

Last weekend's violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one woman was killed in a auto rampage after bloody street battles, ratcheted up racial tensions already inflamed by white supremacist groups marching more openly in rallies across the United States.

Although the right-wing group hosting the rally publicly distanced itself from the violent and deadly Charlottesville rally last week, many feared it would attract alt-right group members. The day of violence started with clashes at a white nationalist rally.

Thousands of counter-protesters had convened in two groups before the main rally, chanting "No Nazis, no KKK, no fascists in the United States of America!"

"Whether they go to museums, cemeteries, or other willing institutions, it is clear that they no longer can be celebrated in shared civic areas", Mr Signer said in a statement. He later issued a specific condemnation of the white nationalists, but continued to equate their actions with those of the counterprotesters.

Boston's Democratic mayor, Marty Walsh, and Massachusetts' Republican governor, Charlie Baker, both warned that extremist unrest would not be tolerated in the city famed as the cradle of American liberty.

Some of Trump's comments, criticising "alt-left" protesters as "very, very violent", came on August 15th with Mnuchin standing by the president's side in the lobby of Trump Tower in NY. "We should work to bring people together, not apart".
