Thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-Nazi slogans converged Saturday morning on downtown Boston, dwarfing a smaller group of conservatives staging their own "free speech rally".
The protests were contentious but lacked the same level of violence demonstrated in Charlottesville after riot police dispersed the rally.
Officials estimated a turnout of 40,000 demonstrators.
Boston police say 27 arrests were made during the conservative activist rally and counterdemonstration on Boston Common.

"It's time to do something", said Katie Zipps, who travelled from Malden, north of Boston, for the counter-demonstration.
President Donald Trump applauded the people in Boston who he said were "speaking out" against bigotry and hate.
