A Texas man was arrested Monday after he allegedly tried to destroy a Confederate statue in a park during the weekend by planting explosives, federal officials said.

A park ranger caught Andrew Schneck kneeling next to a statue of Confederate leader Richard Dowling at Hermann Park Saturday.

The officer "watched Schneck to be holding two little boxes with different things inside", including "what seemed, by all accounts, to be conduit tape and wires", a criminal protest says. After placing the boxes on the ground per the ranger's request, Schneck then allegedly took a drink from plastic bottle but spit it on the ground. He pleaded guilty in 2014 to federal charges of knowingly storing explosives, and was sentenced to five years' probation. Last November, a federal judge approved a motion by Schneck's lawyers for early termination of his sentence, with his attorney insisting that he is "not a risk to public safety" and that "his focus is no longer concentrated on high-risk activities". Nitroglycerin is highly risky to transport or use. ln its undiluted form, it is one of the world's most powerful explosives. He told law enforcement he had other chemicals at his home on Albans Road near Rice University.

Court documents also state that Schneck had conducted "chemistry experiments" at his home in Houston. "We just know that there is some significant hazardous materials within the objective", said Larry Satterwhite, the assistant chief of the Houston Police Department.

"When asked by (the park ranger) if he wanted to harm the statue, Schneck responded that he did, and that he (Schneck) did not 'like that guy, '" the complaint read.

Philip Hilder, Schneck's attorney, declined to comment Monday. They also said the box contained HMTD, or hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, another explosive.

Houston police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the home owned by Schneck's parents on Sunday and continued the search into Monday afternoon, local media reported. On Monday, houses located near Schneck's home were evacuated as authorities worked to dispose of materials found in his home, where he lives with this mother. That included a ban on coming in contact with explosive materials.

Schneck made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Mary Milly Monday morning. A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 24.
