Phoenix Braces for Tuesday Trump Rally and Protests

  • Joe Arpaio

Arpaio was recently convicted of contempt of court by a federal judge and has always been a hero to hardliners looking to stop illegal immigration.

"I said to him, "if it starts to get dirty and nasty with protesters, I'm out of here, I'm not waiting for permission to leave", Bynum said.

"President Trump does not know how to be a unifier - does not know how to ease the pain of this country like we saw George Bush do after 9/11", Gallego said Monday.

"If the case is that he's coming here to pardon Arpaio, we don't need that", he said. And, during the same news conference when he commented at length on Charlottesville, Mr. Trump took a jab at Mr. McCain, who derailed the Republican health care bill with a dramatic thumb-down vote on the Senate floor last month: "You mean Senator McCain who voted against us getting good health care?" The White House did not respond to a request for comment on the president's plans.

The rally will be held in the Phoenix Convention Center, just four blocks away from ASU's downtown Phoenix campus.

In Yuma, Trump will visit Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and also is expected to meet with Border Patrol officials.

Arpaio told NBC News "I don't know" if Trump will pardon him.

Andy Biggs on Monday released a statement and sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking him to pardon former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

In a modest but telling swipe at Ward and, by extension, at Trump, the Senate Leadership Fund, a political committee closely aligned with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, is spending $100,000 on digital ads that say of her, "Not conservative, just insane ideas".

The White House, however, made it clear Tuesday that Trump would not issue a pardon at the rally in Phoenix, the Los Angeles Times reported. Let's not forget that on August 31, 2016 Trump went there to deliver a dark and nativist immigration speech.

Before that, they were both high-profile boosters of the conspiracy theory that Obama was not born in the USA and had faked his birth certificate. In 2012, he launched his own "investigation" into the legitimacy of President Obama's birth certificate. "He's toxic!" Trump wrote.

Both Lines and Gutierrez said they hope that any protests surrounding the Trump rally are peaceful.

The two haven't diverged on immigration. He faces up to six months in prison and is to be sentenced in the fall. If he wanted, he could potentially tweet out a pardon of Arpaio.

That's why Mackowiak said he would have rather seen Trump do an infrastructure event. If the president wants to do so at the rally on Tuesday, Arpaio could be there in person to accept it ― he told Politico he is keeping his schedule open for the day.

The president's rally comes on the heels of violence at a white nationalist march in Charlottesville, Virginia, last week that highlighted the deep political and personal divides gripping the nation's psyche. He called the idea of a pardon hypocritical.

To those wondering if the removal of hard-right political adviser Steve Bannon signals a softening of President Trump's anti-immigrant stances and sneering disdain for political norms, pay close attention to his rally Tuesday in Phoenix.
