  • Grace Mugabe to appear in court over Johannesburg assault charge

Zimbabwe's first lady is expected to make her first public appearance today since being accused of assaulting a young model at a luxury hotel in South Africa.

Signed on Saturday, the notice recognizes "the immunities and privileges of the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. Grace Mugabe".

Zimbabwe had also effected the ban on British Airways flights, forcing its aircraft that was due to land at Victoria Falls International Airport to land in neighboring Livingstone, Zambia.

South African media quoted DIRCO spokesman, Clayson Monyela, saying Grace could not claim diplomatic immunity if she was in the country on personal business. He says "the South Africans know what should be done".

The legal team for Gabriella Engels, the 20-year-old model who says she was struck by Mugabe, said last week that she had rejected a proposed settlement.

Reports of the assault angered many South Africans, who called on their government to prosecute the Zimbabwean first lady.

South Africa's government, meanwhile, said it had not yet decided whether to grant the Zimbabwe government's request for diplomatic immunity for Grace Mugabe, who has not commented on the allegations against her.

South African police had placed border posts on "red alert" to prevent her from leaving the country, but the worldwide relations minister granted the wife of 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

Zimbabwe First Lady Grace Mugabe recently traveled to South Africa, reportedly to address issues with her two sons, Robert and Chatunga.

South African Airways said it has clearance to fly to and from Zimbabwe on Sunday after the lifting of restrictions that were announced on Saturday.

Unnamed government sources were quoted on Friday by local and global media outlets as saying there was no way Ms Mugabe would be arrested and charged for allegedly assaulting model Gabriella Engels (20) last weekend.

Minorities' rights lobby group AfriForum, which is providing legal assistance to Ms Engels, has vowed to oppose any move by the government to grant Ms Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

But Willie Spies, an AfriForum attorney, said the decision was taken irrationally and unlawfully and this would be the basis of their application to have it reviewed by the High Court in Pretoria in the next week.

Zimbabwean and South African airlines resumed operations yesterday after a diplomatic standoff between the neighbouring countries grounded flights for nearly two days from Friday evening.

Grace Mugabe has been criticised for a fiery temper and lavish shopping expeditions, but her rising political profile has caused some to ask if she is manoeuvring to succeed her husband.
