  • Raiders RB Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem

Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch remained seated in order to take a stand. "It's not a form of anything other than me being myself, '" Del Rio said Lynch told him.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said he was unaware of Lynch's intention to sit but said he spoke with Lynch after the game. "But I respect you as a man and you can do your thing".

In a time of controversy and racial tension in the United States, Lynch chose the ideal moment to sit during the national anthem.

In his first game back since he retired following the 2015 season, Lynch was dressed in uniform but did not play.

Dolphins' Tannehill out for season, goes on injured reserve
Tannehill will have surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a person familiar with the decision said Friday. Brandon Doughty and David Fales are further down the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart.

Without hearing from Lynch, it's impossible to say for sure what he intended to say by sitting out the anthem, or what he meant when he explained himself to his coach afterward.

The decision is identical to ex-San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick when he kneeled during the national anthem during the regular season previous year to protest police brutality in the United States.

In previous exchanges with the media prior to or after games, Lynch responded to any and all questions by media reports with a simple "Yeah".

In April, Lynch, along with former teammates Chris Avril and Michael Bennet, traveled to Haiti to help build schools and homes capable of enduring natural disasters, according to Seahawks Wire. Lynch (No. 24) can be seen standing on the sidelines during the anthem (about 3:40 of video). Kaepernick, who has not signed with any teams since his contract ended last season with the 49ers, has said he would stand during the National Anthem in 2017, but as of now, is not on any team's roster. He added that he hopes "people open up their eyes and see that there's really a big problem going on and something needs to be done for it to stop". "If you're really not racist then you won't see what he's doing as a threat to America".
