A Holocaust survivor who was recognized as the world's oldest man has died in Israel at the age of 113.

Kristal's death on Friday came a year after he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living man.

Born on September 15, 1903, in the town of Zarnow, Poland, Kristal moved to Lodz in 1920 to work in his family's candy business.

Kristal, who was born on September 15, 1903, was in the news a year ago for another reason.

Mr Kristal was presented with a certificate by Head of Records for Guinness World Records as the world's oldest man on March 11 last year when he was 112 years and 178 days old. Kristal's mother and father were killed during World War I, and his wife and children were killed during the Holocaust.

Oren Kristal said his grandfather gave no explanation as to the secret behind his incredible longevity.

Kristal was sent to various concentration camps including Auschwitz where he performed slave labor, and he only weighed about 81 pounds when he was found by the Allies. "I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why".

Kristal, who worked as a candy manufacturer, is survived by two children and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 1950, he moved to Haifa with his second wife and their son, working again as a confectioner. "There have been smarter, stronger and better-looking men than me who are no longer alive".

The world's oldest person is 117-year-old Violet-Mosse Brown of Jamaica.
