Fittingly, he will face Justin Gatlin and the United States on Saturday night in the final chapter of his unparalleled career.

"It's been brilliant. The energy in the stadium is outstanding", Bolt said, hailing the deafening support in the packed-out London Stadium "not just for me but the whole championships".

A distraught Bolt was consoled on the ground by his sprint team-mates and he limped out of the stadium, not the way he probably envisaged his send-off going. It's hard to be sad, it's wonderful and it's been brilliant.

For the better part of the past decade, Bolt has been 100 percent reliable in getting relay gold for the island nation.

The eight-time Olympic gold medalist finished third in a photo finish to runner-up Christian Coleman, and Gatlin on August 5 at London Stadium, site of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Nehemiah, who won the 1984 Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, said Coe and the IAAF should be more gracious and accept their rules allowed athletes like Gatlin to get a chance at redeeming themselves. And the result in the relay is no longer a foregone conclusion. The man who stands atop the 100m podium in the Olympics and the World Championships also carries the title of "Fastest Man in the World". "I did 18 years of track and field and I've been retired five years, and they're still talking about me, so I guess I still have it".

Christian Coleman took silver in the 100 ahead of Bolt and it gave the US team an added boost.

After his shock defeat by Justin Gatlin in the 100metres last Saturday, those in power at the sport's governing body can be forgiven for willing the Jamaican to bow out in style with one last gold medal.

The 30-year-old could only manage bronze behind Gatlin and Coleman in the 100m and, having fallen to the ground in the relay, his team-mates gathered round him, before Bolt was helped to his feet and limped over the line, applauding the crowd as he did so. Trailing when he got the baton on the anchor leg, Bolt powered away and quickly swept past his rivals and had time to look to his right before crossing in 37.95 seconds.

Bolt will be joined in the heats by a supporting cast of Tyquendo Tracey, Julian Forte and Michael Campbell - a few of the athletes who will be charged with keeping the island in the forefront of global sprinting in the years to come.

Authorities suspect Belgian company Poultry Vision of producing a fipronil-laced treatment created to kill mites in chickens. The association's chief executive, Robert Gooch, said: "This incident should be a wake-up call for retailers".

Yohan Blake, the second fastest man ever after Bolt in both the 100 and 200 metres, was banned for three months in 2009.

Maybe so, but when he asks the crowd where Bolt is, in between booing, they'll say 'he's behind you.' Two places behind you. "Over the years, this will be the team bringing in the golds".

The top three from each of the two heats and next two fastest finishers from the remaining qualify for the final round.

For me the whole event has been overshadowed by controversy, particularly over the drugs issue - a problem that's gone on for so many years now.

Danny Talbot, Adam Gemili, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and CJ Ujah ran a collective time of 37.47 seconds to beat favourites U.S. to first place and claim gold - their first since 2004. It might also remind them that the future is not looking so glorious.

Germany clocked 42.34 seconds for the victory, well ahead of Jamaica, who crossed the line in 42.50.

Olympic champions United States won the first heat in a world leading time of 41.84 seconds, even in the absence of individual 100m champion Torie Bowie.

Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the ongoing World Athletics Championships, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) chief said tackling doping should remain the sole prerogative of sports bodies.

Unless he makes an unlikely comeback, he will take the field for the last time on Saturday in Jamaica's 4x100m relay in the World Championships being held in London.
