The rally has been organized against the city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from the Emancipation Park.

On July 8 a few dozen Ku Klux Klan marchers gathered in Charlottesville to protest plans to remove the statue of Lee.

University President Teresa Sullivan issued a tame statement condemning and expressing sadness over the fact that some of the demonstrators espousing the violent eradication of non-white people engaged in acts of violence during the march.

Police had to intervene after a scuffle erupted between the two sides. She said some injuries had been reported. ('Blood and soil' is a Nazi-linked ideology based on ethnic descent (blood) and territory (soil)). They carried torches and chanted "you will not replace us and "Jews will not replaced us".

A smaller group of counter-protesters met the march at Jefferson Statue on campus, circling the monument and linking arms, according to the local Cavalier Daily. The gathering was declared an "unlawful assembly", allowing police to disperse the protesters, and police cleared the park where the rally was to be held.

Initial videos of the night before the main event show strong attendance already, and reports surfacing on Twitter is that the pepper spray is already misting the campus and a brawl may have broken out.

One of the counter-protesters who was hit described the scene to a reporter shortly after.

"It's been going on for a long time in our country, not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama, it's been going on for a long, long time", Trump said in a televised statement from New Jersey on Saturday. Local law enforcement agencies could not be reached immediately for comment.

The mayor has condemned the march as a "parade of hatred".

Police deployed tear gas against the crowd shortly before 11:30 a.m.

"I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here", Charlottesville Mayor Mike Singer said on his Twitter feed.

"I want to urge my fellow Virginians who may consider joining either in support or opposition to the planned rally to make alternative plans", said McAuliffe. There were also heated confrontations Friday night.

The demonstrations began Friday in Charlottesville with white nationalists marching through town and while carrying lit torches.

The unrest prompted Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, to place National Guard members on standby, and encourage Virginians to stay away from Saturday's event.

Thousands of far-right supporters, including members of white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan, are expected to turn out for the event.

"This is about an anti-white climate within the Western world and the need for white people to have advocacy like other groups do", he said in an interview.
