  • Dutch knew about contaminated eggs in 2016, Belgian minister claims

He said test results received overnight from the French food safety agency on affected eggs and egg products showed "the level of contamination does not present a risk for the consumer".

Authorities in Sweden, Switzerland, Romania and France also reported having found contaminated eggs.

Around 21,000 eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil were thought to have been imported into the United Kingdom, but the true figure has now been revealed to be much higher, at 700,000.

The European Commission now plans to hold a meeting with regulators and ministers on 26 September.

Millions of eggs have been recalled across Europe after the insecticide was used as a cleaning product on some European Union farms, despite not being authorised for use near food-producing animals.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said in a statement that these eggs were mostly sold to catering firms, cafeterias and cafes.

It believes most of the contaminated eggs were used in processed foods in which egg is one ingredient among many others, mostly used in sandwich fillings or other chilled foods.

'Supermarkets Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose are all urgently withdrawing millions of fresh salads, sandwiches and fillers which contain the infected eggs, ' the Telegraph writes.

The crisis also crossed the border into Belgium and Germany, with millions of eggs removed from the shop shelves as well.

"This is just the latest of a number of food safety issues connected to eggs produced outside of the United Kingdom in recent years", Ian Jones, Vhairman of British Lion egg processors, told The Guardian.

Reuters explained that fipronil is a popular insecticide used to treat pets for fleas and ticks, but it is forbidden for use in the food chain.

The association's chief executive, Robert Gooch, said: "This incident should be a wake-up call for retailers".

Authorities suspect Belgian company Poultry Vision of producing a fipronil-laced treatment created to kill mites in chickens.

Agriculture officials in Portugal have moved to quell fears about contaminated eggs reaching supermarket shelves here, saying none of the affected lots were ever intended for this country.

Earlier this month, Dutch and Belgian prosecutors launched a joint investigation at eight locations across The Netherlands with the assistance of Europe's policing and judicial agencies Europol and Eurojust.

If consumed in large quantities by humans it can damage the kidneys, liver, and thyroid glands.

The scare started in the Netherlands and Belgium and it is thought that Dutch disinfectant is at fault. "The minister told lawmakers that Dutch authorities had been aware of the contamination since last November and failed to alert others".
