  • Thousands rally in 'caravan' procession for ousted Nawaz Sharif

Raja Zafarul Haq, leader of the House in the Pakistan Senate, has said Shehbaz Sharif would be the new president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The rally remained largely peaceful but some Sharif's supporters assaulted the crew of two local news TV stations that had been critical of him during the court proceedings, police official Hafeez Khan said. Sharif plans to spend at least two nights in as many cities along the Grand Trunk Road while leading the rally from Islamabad.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was welcomed to a huge ovation from his supporters as he reached his stopover near Jhelum en route to Lahore. "This needs to change if Pakistan is to progress", said Sharif, who in 1999 was ousted by then Army chief Pervez Musharraf.

"Choosing his wife over his brother will deepen the crisis of credibility for Nawaz Sharif", said Mosharraf Zaidi, a columnist.

Sharif plans to return to his hometown from Islamabad for the first time since the Supreme Court disqualified him on July 28 for being dishonest while declaring his assets - specifically, that his son's Dubai-based company listed a monthly salary for him.

The top court sacked him last month after an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, briefly plunging the nuclear-armed nation into political uncertainty.

Mr Sharif had initially announced that Mr Abbasi will be appointed as interim premier until his brother Shahbaz is elected as a member of Parliament to become premier. Qadri has vowed to get justice for eight supporters killed during anti-government rallies in 2014.

It has been learnt that Sharif is expected to set off on his journey from Rawalpindi's Kacheri Chowd, where a number of supporters have already started gathering.
