MATTIS: North Korea should stop before it gets destroyed

  • North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspecting the test-fire of the intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14

North Korea's nuclear activities could, Mattis argued, "lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people". "The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people", he added.

"We always maintain a high state of readiness and have the capabilities to counter any threat, to include those from North Korea", Lt. Col. Christopher Logan, a Pentagon spokesman, told Business Insider.

"They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen", Trump said.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that North Korea had obtained the capability of creating a nuclear warhead small enough to place on a missile. While the State Department meant to resolve the situation through diplomacy, Mattis suggested that the overwhelming capabilities of the USA military and its allies would demolish North Korea.

Mattis' words, some of the strongest he has issued on North Korea, followed incendiary comments from US President Donald Trump who said that threats to the US from Pyongyang would be met with "fire and fury".

"The (North Korean) regime's actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by ours and would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates".

Tension in the region has risen since North Korea carried out two nuclear bomb tests a year ago and two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July. He said the USA nuclear arsenal is the most powerful it's ever been under his leadership. DPRK is short for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Trump Promises "Fire And Fury" For North Korea
A section of the latest DIA report, which was dated July 28, was read over the telephone to the Washington Post by an official. Military options include launching a "preventative war" against North Korea, White House national security adviser H.R.

"There's obviously growing concern, and that concern is fueled when the president of the USA deliberately uses language that escalates sort of the war of words and I think, unfortunately, matches the tone and tenor of North Korean officials", Kildee said.

Meanwhile, France is urging all sides "to act responsibly and to de-escalate" tensions over North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Earlier Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson defended Trump's remarks.

News of the regime's capability comes against the backdrop of several provocative missile and nuclear tests.

Robert Kelly, professor of political science at Pusan National University, told Al Jazeera that both North Korea and Trump were nearly certainly exaggerating in their respective rhetoric, as a conflict would be disastrous - and that Trump was likely stepping up the rhetoric to pressure China into taking action to curb North Korea's behaviour.

Asked whether Mr Trump's escalating rhetoric was hurting prospects for reviving negotiations, Mr Rycroft said: "What's hurting the six-party talks is the inability so far of the North Korean regime to do what it has to do which is to halt its nuclear programme and to halt its intercontinental ballistic missile programme". Japan hosts around 54,000 U.S. military personnel, the U.S. Department of Defense says, and tens of thousands of Americans work in both countries.
