None of the six soldiers targeted in the attack is believed to have sustained life threatening injuries. The driver is on the run.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was arrested on a highway north of Paris hours after a driver rammed a vehicle into a crowd of soldiers, leaving at least three of the six hit with serious injuries - though they were believed to be non-life threatening. Police have closed off the roads.

Officials say a BMW was used to carry out the attack.

She said: "This morning at 7.56 a.m., a vehicle that had visibly prepositioned itself drove, on objective, toward around 10 soldiers from Opération Sentinelle at the exit of the barracks that were built for them two years ago by the municipality".

Levallois-Perret Mayor Patrick Balkany told French media he has "no doubt" this was a deliberate act.

Police wait near the scene of the attack, a narrow alleyway.

"The vehicle did not stop", Balkany said.

Six of the dozen or so troops were injured - two of them seriously - in the attack which is being investigated by counter-terrorism officials.

The soldiers were on an Operation Sentinelle routine patrol, which was launched after the Charlie Hebdo attack in January 2015 to protect civilians from terror attacks.

He told news channel BFMTV that the auto "accelerated very fast when [the soldiers] were coming out" of the barracks.

The security forces in France have also become targets of Islamist inspired acts of violence.

Law enforcement said several eyewitnesses reported seeing the auto careen toward soldiers exiting a building near military barracks.

After an intense search, officers intercepted the vehicle on the A16 highway that runs from the outskirts of Paris north to Calais, the National Police says.

France has been under a state of emergency since the November 2015 attacks in the French capital which left 130 people dead.

In June, a 40-year-old Algerian doctorate student who had pledged allegiance to IS attacked a policeman with a hammer outside Notre Dame cathedral.
