Google fires diversity memo author

  • Google worker's call for end to positive discrimination in favour of women and ethnic minority staff sparks backlash

The action comes after a memo was leaked at the weekend from a male software engineer, which claimed that "biological differences" were behind the fact that more men worked in leadership roles at the technology giant.

The memo fueled the heated discussion over how women are treated in the male dominated Silicon Valley where sexual harassment scandal is vehement topic and there are many incidences happening in Uber Technologies Inc and several venture capital firms. It criticizes Google for offering mentoring and other programs for women and minorities and for what it calls "special treatment" of job candidates who are women or underrepresented minorities.

Damore, who confirmed his firing to the press, said that he is exploring "all possible legal remedies."

CEO Sundar Pichai said James Damore crossed the line by pushing gender stereotypes in last week's internal memo. According to the Associated Press, a Google spokesperson said the company could not have retaliated against Damore because it was not aware of the complaint until hearing about it in the news media after he was dismissed.

"I have a legal right to express my concerns about the terms and conditions of my working environment and to bring up potentially illegal behaviour, which is what my document does", Damore told the New York Times.

Voters who haven't cast ballots for two years are sent a notice asking them to confirm their registration or update their address. The US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit heard the case and ruled that the state policy did violate the NVRA.

James Damore, the Google engineer who was sacked Monday for writing a controversial memo about diversity, has filed a complaint with federal labor officials. He may have or find evidence that Google tried to chill his efforts to engage with other workers to change Google's diversity practices and policies. When addressing the gap in representation in the population, we need to look at population level differences in distributions.

Google has denied the charges, arguing that it doesn't have a gender gap in pay, but has declined to share full salary information with the government.

Google is now defending itself from a lawsuit from the US Department of Labour which is alleging that the company systematically discriminates against women. But it also asserts that women "prefer jobs in social and artistic areas" while more men "may like coding because it requires systemizing".

Google's vice president of diversity, Danielle Brown, sent a memo in response to the furor, saying the engineer's essay 'advanced incorrect assumptions about gender'.

Google fired engineer James Damore after he wrote a ten-page document about "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber". Damore may have the right to voice his opinions, but Google also has the right to decide that they do not want someone with Damore's regressive and offensive attitudes representing their company.
