How To Best Experience The Great Total Solar Eclipse

  • For the first time in nearly four decades a total solar eclipse will be visible to parts of the continental United States on Aug. 21. This image was taken during a 2002 total solar eclipse

Millions are expected to gather in Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and SC to watch the sky go dark when the moon passes between the sun and the earth.

Harford County Public Library will offer several events to celebrate the first total solar eclipse in the continental United States in almost 40 years.

As already mentioned, the August 21 total solar eclipse will sweep across the United States, but that doesn't mean everyone will get the chance to see it.

"It's going to traverse the entire pass of the United States", Kopernik Observatory Executive Director Drew Deskur said.

The darkest path, where Americans will be able to see the total eclipse, will stretch all the way from Salem, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina.

Eclipse Fests, StarFests, SolarFests, SolFests, Darkening of the SunFests, MoonshadowFests, EclipseCons, Eclipse Encounters and Star Parties are planned along the long but narrow path of totality, where the moon completely blots out the sun.

First, looking directly at the sun - even during a partial eclipse - can easily damage your eyes.

NASA will have a live stream of the eclipse, but Faherty says people living in places that will get a partial eclipse should prioritize seeing it with their own eyes.

Tesla Wants to Raise $1.5 Billion for Model 3 Production
But prospective investors in this deal will just get the yield - and perhaps not enough to compensate for the risk, Flaherty said. Unlike Tesla's last fundraising, which used convertible notes, the new notes offering would not dilute equity holders.

More than 8,000 people are expected to make their way to the football stadium on that Monday to safely witness the total solar eclipse. Be sure to look for ones with a safety marking, which will indicate a rating of "ISO 12312-2".

The university will provide free glasses to view the eclipse, and will also open its solar telescope for observation. During most of a solar eclipse, the sun will be partly blocked by the moon, making it less bright. A dialogue box will pop up that will tell you what time the partial eclipse starts in your area, what time maximum eclipse will happen, and when the final partial eclipse will be over.

"It is the most weird, creepy, awe-inspiring astronomical event you will experience", Cooke says.

Solar-powered generators centered in the path of totality will be affected the most, as the moon will block all direct sunlight for up to three minutes. Some animals would also make their way to their nightly resting places, as if convinced that it is already nighttime.

If you can't get a live view of the August 21 total solar eclipse that will sweep across the US, there's another option for seeing this celestial event - watching it in virtual reality.

Could your eclipse glasses be counterfeit? Clouds could always spoil the view, so eclipse watchers need to be ready to split for somewhere with clear skies, if necessary.

It adds: "For a few brief minutes or seconds, the Sun's pearly white corona, red prominences, and chromosphere are visible".

"It dawned on me when STEM became a buzzword there could be a program I could offer, that could get kids excited about kids in STEM, so I developed that and took it around to (local school) principals", he said.
