The question of retirement cropped up for the 35-year-old Wilford immediately after his Houston Texans lost 34-16 in the AFC Divisional playoff game on January 14 at the New England Patriots - the organization with which Wilford played his first 11 seasons. He was a five-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro in 2012, and won a Super Bowl ring in his first and last seasons with the Patriots.

Vince Wilfork is walking away from the game of football, and he's doing it in a way that only he can.

The mountainous, amiable nose tackle played 11 seasons with the Patriots, going from a rookie first-round pick on the 2004 championship team to a beloved veteran leader for the 2014 Super Bowl champs.

Wilfork's ability to clog the middle on the defensive line was invaluable for the Patriots, a team whose defensive scheme is built around athletic, hybrid linebackers flying all over the place. In the four games with Wilfork, New England allowed 105 rushing yards per game; in the 12 games without him, it gave up 178.8.

S.Africa's Zuma faces secret vote on no-confidence motion
The ANC holds 246 parliamentary seats, but several members have already indicated publicly that they will vote against Zuma. Our correspondent reported that the secret vote could "embolden" some ruling party members to vote for Zuma's ousting.

Vince Wilfork is ready to hang up his cleats.

A prankster and jokester wherever he played, here is another one of Wilfork's finest moments.

But the announcement of his retirement was also an announcement that he has plans to return to New England- but this time he'll be tailgating. Peace out. I'm outta here.

Wilfork ends the ad by saying he'll be back "but not on that field".
