Chicago to file suit against Trump's immigration policies

  • Emanuel said Chicago won't

And Emanuel in a rare Sunday news conference maintained Trump's policy would damage efforts to tamp down crime, because people in the city without documentation would then be afraid to cooperate with police.

"Chicago will not be blackmailed into changing our values, and we are and will remain a welcoming city", Emanuel said during the press conference, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Todd gets reaction from Robert Law, Government Relations Director for FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said the Justice Department will withhold a justice assistance grant from cities that fail to comply with new requirements related to immigration.

The federal grant at the center of the lawsuit provided $2.3 million to Chicago previous year to purchase police equipment, such as cars, computers, radios and Tasers, Emanuel said.

It looks like the fight between sanctuary cities and the Trump administration is heating up.

In this regard, the Monarch said there would be no breakthrough in the peace process without a United States push for a solution. The mosque compound is in east Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in 1967 in a move never recognised by the global community.

Police and city officials in sanctuary cities say deporting undocumented immigrants, who are not accused of serious offences, harms public safety, because it discourages them from reporting crimes. They say Chicago police officers make no inquiries about immigration status because doing so might fracture residents' trust of the police and discourage those here illegally from reporting crimes or cooperating as witnesses, making the streets more unsafe.

The California Attorney General is considering suing the Trump administration after the Department of Justice took steps Thursday to pull funds from so-called "sanctuary cities", according to The Sacramento Bee. He said the city will ask a judge to declare the new Byrne grant conditions unlawful and unconstitutional before they affect the city.

Chicago Corporation Counsel Ed Siskel said the attorney general's office doesn't have "the authority to add these requirements to a grant program created by Congress and can not commandeer local law enforcement to carry out federal immigration law functions". Chicago alone was slated to receive $3.2m from the grant program this year to purchase new police equipment. President Barack Obama nominated Adegbile to run the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, but Senate Republicans and a handful of Democrats rejected his nomination because he had written a brief arguing that there was racism in the jury selection process for the trial of a man who was convicted of killing a police officer.

"We will always be a welcoming city", he continued, adding that local police departments rely on the cooperation of the immigrant community - both documented and undocumented.

Last month, Sessions announced that the Justice Department would deny a type of federal public safety grant to so-called sanctuary jurisdictions that withhold information about crime suspects from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In April، the Department of Justice said it would defund those cities that refuse to allow federal immigration authorities access local jails and information about undocumented immigrants among other things.
