Anti-government activists stand near a barricade burning in flames in Valencia, Venezuela on August 6, 2017, a day after a new assembly with supreme powers and loyal to President Nicolas Maduro started functioning in the country.

In a tweet, Ortega asked the global community to denounce what she called "this arbitrary action".

President Michel Temer says the ongoing political crisis in neighboring Venezuela is worrying and his country is "on the side of the Venezuelan people".

Ortega Diaz represents a political camp in Venezuela of leftist populists who have broken with Maduro.

"We are in the face of a grave and unprecedented action that could constitute a crime", Ortega said in a statement published by her office.

"The Constituent is getting prepared for its installation [on Friday]".

Haydee Franco is coordinating secretary of the Progressive Advance party.

"It's still very hard to know to what extent there are significant divisions within the military", Michael Shifter, president of the Washington-based Inter-American Dialogue said recently. He was declared dead at a medical clinic.

Protests are taking place in various neighborhoods around Valencia Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of locals gathered outside the base chanting, "Freedom!" and troops dispersed them with tear gas.

Vladimir Padrino Lopez alleges that the men were recruited by "right-wing extremists" with ties to unspecified foreign governments.

Caguaripano, the leader of the alleged plot, has a history of rebellion.

"In 2014, while a captain in the national guard and amid a previous wave of anti-government unrest, he released a 12-minute video denouncing Maduro".

"Today's terrorist attack is no more than a propaganda show", Padrino Lopez said.

Jesus Suarez Chourio says troops responded "with one fist" and "the riffraff was defeated once again".

"At dawn, terrorists entered the Paramacay base in Valencia to attack our national armed forces".

Still, the episode highlights how volatile Venezuela is after four months of sustained anti-government protests over what foes call a lurch into dictatorship in the midst of a bruising economic crisis. That intensified this week with the election and installation of a constitutional assembly that will rule with almost unlimited powers.

Questions about the Venezuelan army's support for President Nicolás Maduro are gaining urgency, after a video posted to social media showed a group of armed men in military uniform claiming to be staging a rebellion against a "murderous tyranny" Sunday. He later reportedly sought exile after a military tribunal ordered his arrest, appearing in an interview on CNN en Espanol to draw attention to discontent within the ranks.

The person says bursts of gunfire could be heard coming from the base in the central city of Valencia starting around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The US Treasury Department slapped sanctions against 13 Venezuelan government officials.

"Various terrorists were detained", according to Mr Cabello, who said troops acted quickly to control the situation.
