"This morning at about 0620hrs, we received an information that some armed men invaded St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu where the presiding priest was conduction an early morning mass", he said.

Attacks on churches are rare in southern Nigeria, where there is a predominantly Christian population.

"On hearing the sad development, Governor Obiano stormed the scene to ascertain the level of damage and sympathise with the people".

Garba Umar, the Anambra State police chief, said the violence was tied to a feud within the local community.

The Police have put the number of deaths from gunmen attack at the St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra on Sunday morning at about 11.

"So far, 12 persons have been confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary here", a worker at Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital told AFP.

"The man after shooting at his targeted victims still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers, " he said.

The union in a statement said the attack "raises concern over Nigeria's gradual drift to anarchy".

A witness said some gunmen, who concealed their identities with masks, broke into the church around 6am when the first mass service was holding.

"Such violent incidents dehumanise our society".

He said the gunmen later went on a rampage and opened fire at the remaining worshipers numbering over 100, noting that scores of people were killed on the spot.

"Nobody has the right to kill innocent citizens".
