  • No respite IT raids D K Shivakumar for third day

IT officials raided Shivakumar's home in Delhi's Safdarjung area on Friday morning. Shivakumar has a reputation for being Congress's money and muscle man in Karnataka, and income tax sleuths recovered Rs 10 crore from the raids.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha soon after Zero Hour started, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the BJP-led NDA government out of political vendetta was using central agencies against opposition leaders. The Congress had put them up at the resort to prevent them from allegedly being poached by the Bharatiya Janata Party before the August 8 Rajya Sabha elections.

He reiterated his loyalty to the Chief Minister and thanked him for supporting him during the raids.

In a statement, he said, "I-T raids targeting Energy Minister DK Shivakumar is completely politically motivated and Central Government's role behind it is well known". Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the Centre had sent the forces with the Income-Tax Officers without informing the State government.

"This is a politically motivated raid, the timing shows that".

Jaitley, however, said that the minister, who had "gone and parked himself" at the resort, was picked up from there for questioning.

The IT department had also raided the house of the minister's father-in-law in Bengaluru.

Income tax officials say they have seized cash and jewellery worth more than Rs 15 crore in the raids so far.

He said about 30 CRPF personnel were deployed in Bengaluru alone during the search in full gear with weapons, which resulted in protests by Minister's supporters and police had to be called in to maintain law and order. "Today (Wednesday) IT raids were conducted against a Congress minister at the resort where our MLAs are staying".

The Congress sent its 44 MLAs to Bengaluru after its six MLAs from Gujarat joined BJP.

Minister Shiv Kumar, a Congress heavy weight of Karnataka who will be crucial for the party in the coming Assembly elections, has meanwhile been "taken away" by IT officials. However, the I-T Department said that it has the freedom to choose any security service.

Senior Congress leader, Ahmed Patel who is contesting the Gujarat RS polls for his fifth term also lashed out at the BJP, accusing them of being "on an unprecedented witch hunt just to win one Rajya Sabha seat".
