The Soyuz MS-05 will launch from a launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 11:41 a.m. EDT Friday (GMT-4; 9:41 p.m. local time). Since previous year, he has also served as the chairman for the youth organization Russian Movement of Schoolchildren. He commanded the underwater NEEMO 19 mission (the name's short for NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) in 2014.

A Russian Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft with the crew of a new expedition has reached the near-Earth orbit and is heading for the International Space Station (ISS), State Space Corporation Roscosmos told TASS on Friday.

NASA's Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson, as well as the veteran Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, will welcome the three spacemen on the space station. The crew will work on more than 250 experiments in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development.

The new ISS crew members are safely in the orbit after the launch and will travel for six hours in the spacecraft before docking to the space station's Rassvet module at 6 pm.
