People did not just salute the courageous sacrifices of the soldiers, one of the Twitter users even took to Twitter to share the heartwarming picture of his father - an army official - who was a part of the Kargil war.

The Kargil war was fought between India and Pakistan after Pakistani troops occupied Indian posts in Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region.

The ultimate victory of the Indian Army is celebrated each year, on July 26 as it is on this day, in the year 2000 that the war officially came to an end with the Indian Army announcing a complete evacuation of Pakistani trespassers.

July 26th, 1999, 17 years ago on this date, the Indian Army showed extraordinary mettle and recaptured all the posts.

It was constructed to honour 114 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the historic battle of Rezang La pass in 1962 with China.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is named after the success of Operation Vijay which was rolled out in 1999.

Many from Uttarakhand had also lost their lives in the line of duty during the Kargil War.

On the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, reported The Indian Express, BJP president Amit Shah paid floral tributes to Kargil martyrs and felicitated war veterans at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
