Toyota appears to be aiming for a disruption in the electric auto space. The new Toyota EV will use a solid-state battery and be able to recharged in a few minutes.
That coincided with Toyota setting up a team to develop a new range of electric cars, and now we learn from the Japanese press, via Reuters, that the new cars - and their new solid state batteries - will be ready for the market by 2022. This will thus be a long-range fast-charging electric auto. Solid-state batteries also hold the promise of offering roughly twice the energy density of lithium-ion and other "liquid" batteries per pound, which makes their use in EVs attractive once the technology is perfected and commercialized.
Toyota spokeswoman Kayo Doi said the company would not comment on specific product plans but added that it aimed to commercialise all-solid-state batteries by the early 2020s.
But despite apparent antipathy to EVs, Toyota was hedging its bets by waiting for battery technology to be good enough to take away range anxiety, and deliver charging times you could actually live with in the real world.

Toyota may be the first company you think of when you hear "hybrid", but its reluctance to build a fully-electric vehicle is well-documented.
Toyota isn't saying yet where its batteries will end up, but any edge here is bound to be a big boon for automakers looking at a future that increasingly seems like it'll be dominated by EVs.
"The current capabilities of electric vehicles do not meet society's needs, whether it may be the distance the cars can run, or the costs, or how it takes a long time to charge", said "the father of the Prius", Toyota Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, in 2012.
