Charlie Gard's parents 'extremely upset' over GOSH death threats backlash

  • Staff at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London have received death threats in relation to the Charlie Gard case

But the case was reopened earlier this month at England's High Court after two overseas hospitals approached GOSH with possible evidence of alternative treatments that might help Charlie's condition.

So far, the courts have sided with Charlie's doctors, who say the treatment is a fruitless endeavor that has not been tested on someone with Charlie's specific condition and that it will only cause the baby more pain.

Mr Gard and Ms Yates have asked judges to rule that Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, should be allowed to undergo a therapy trial in NY.

After the hospital's lawyer, Katie Gollop, told a judge what doctors thought of results from new scans of Charlie's brain, the baby's mother, Connie Yates, burst into tears, and his father, Chris Gard, yelled "evil", according to the association.

Ms MacLeod said: 'In recent weeks the hospital community has been subjected to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance.

The hospital's constituency MP, Keir Starmer, said: "The abuse of staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital outside the hospital and online is totally unacceptable".

'Many of the messages are menacing, including death threats'.

The court has previously ruled in favour of GOSH and said the baby should be allowed to die with dignity.

Previous courts, including the European Court of Human Rights, have sided with Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is being treated.

President Trump and the Vatican have spoken out in support of Charlie Gard, a terminally ill British infant whose case has captured worldwide attention. Some of the messages were allegedly so vile that they amounted to little more than death threats against doctors, nurses and staff.

"We recognise the tireless advocacy of Charlie's loving parents and the natural sympathy people feel with his situation".

MacLeod said families visiting other ill children have also been "harassed and discomforted" on the grounds of the renowned hospital in London.

Charlie Gard's parents have said they are "extremely upset" by the backlash they received after GOSH revealed the abuse its staff was suffering.

Mr Justice Francis has considered the latest stage of the case at public hearings in the Family Division of the High Court in London.

On Friday the court heard that a new MRI scan on Charlie made for "sad reading".

Columbia University neurology professor Michio Hirano visited Charlie in London last Monday and Tuesday to examine him and meet with doctors from the hospital.
