  • Martin Landau, Oscar Winner for 'Ed Wood,' Dies at 89

They starred in the British-made sci-fi series "Space: 1999" from 1975 to 1977.

The younger Landau joined the Daily News while still in high school and, after five years, he turned down a promotion for fear that he would remain at the paper forever.

"A character without emotions would have driven me insane; I would have had to be lobotomized", he explained in 2001.

Landau quit "Mission: Impossible" after three seasons in 1969 due to a contract dispute, according to THR.

Ironically, Nimoy replaced Landau on "Mission: Impossible".

He made his Broadway debut in 1857 in "Middle of the Night" and made his first major film appearance in 1959, as Leonard, right-hand man of a criminal mastermind, in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest.

Landau most recently appeared in the 2015 TV film adaptation of the HBO series "Entourage".

After the successes of "Tucker", "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Ed Wood", Landau had a steady stream of mostly supporting work on the bigscreen from the mid-'90s through the late 2000s. "I was a bad guy by profession, a heavy in a certain kind of tacky movie".

Security official: Two German tourists killed in Egypt knife attack
An initial investigation suggests that the man reached the hotel by swimming from a nearby beach and attacked the tourists. The attack came only a few hours after five policemen were shot dead in Cairo's twin city of Giza.

Landau went on to teach a number of next-generation actors the craft as a coach at the Actors Studio. Landau won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Landau's career picked up when he got a recurring role on the NBC comedy "Buffalo Bill", in which Dabney Coleman starred. "Ed Wood" featured Johnny Depp as legendary filmmaker Ed Wood.

No one had directed him in several decades, he said, adding that he brought his ideas to a role.

He did have a heroic part as ill-fated Roman officer Rufio in 1963's Cleopatra and a meaty role as Jesus's priestly antagonist Caiaphas in George Stevens's The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), but neither of those epics did much to help the careers of their massive ensemble casts. He found success on the stage in productions of Goat Song, Stalag 17, and First Love. Of thousands of applicants, only he and Steve McQueen were accepted in that class at the prestigious Actors Studio in Manhattan.

In more recent years, Landau appeared in The X-Files, Rounders, and 9, and he earned multiple Emmy nominations for his work on Without A Trace.

He died at a hospital in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Landau had two daughters from his marriage to actress and former Barbara Bain. They divorced in 1993.
