Pelicans sign Rajon Rondo to 1 year deal

The veteran guard and the New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to a one-year deal, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo!

The Pelicans' interest in Rondo, an unrestricted free agent, comes amid potential competition from the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers.

Make that two point guards getting a pay day with the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason.

Rajon Pierre Rondo, from Louisville, played at Kentucky for 2 seasons before being drafted by the Suns and traded to the Celtics.

He also has played 96 playoff games, won a championship with the Celtics in 2007-08 and can provide leadership.

ESPN's Zach Lowe reports that the Pelicans are meeting with Rajon Rondo on Thursday.

Rondo signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Bulls last summer with the second year being a team option with a $3 million buyout.

Rondo averaged 7.8 points and 6.7 assists per game over 69 games and 26.7 minutes per with the Bulls last season.

Rondo's best seasons came in Boston, where he averaged a double-double with more than 10 points and 11 assists for three seasons (2010-2014). But Rondo missed the rest of that series with a broken thumb.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg benched Rondo around the halfway mark of the season, but after trying a number of different combinations, he finally brought him back into the starting lineup as the team pushed for a playoff spot. Rondo was routinely praised by his teammates for mentoring the team's younger players.
