An American specialist who has offered to treat Charlie Gard will examine the terminally ill baby next week, a judge has heard.

Charlie suffers from a form of mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic condition causing progressive muscle weakness and brain damage, and London's world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) says he has no quality of life so his life support should be turned off.

While the judge is granting Hirano access to see the baby, he holds firm that only "dramatic new evidence" would change his mind.

The hospital has said that "a world where only parents speak and decide for children and where children have no separate identity or rights and no court to hear and protect them is far from the world in which [Great Ormond Street Hospital ] treats its child patients".

Sound Off! supporters weigh in. Two weeks ago, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the hospital can remove Charlie's life support and allow him to die. "The Holy Father follows with affection and emotion the story of Charlie Gard and expresses his own closeness to his parents", read a July 2 statement issued by Vatican spokesman Greg Burke.

The case has garnered worldwide attention after interventions by US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis, who both voiced support for Charlie on Twitter.

Mr Justice Francis ruled Dr Hirano, a professor of neurology at the Columbia University Medical Center in NY, could be named in media reports.

According to The Sun, seven specialist doctors, including one in the United Kingdom, have recommended Charlie receive this treatment as a result. "Two worldwide hospitals and their researchers have communicated to us as late as the last 24 hours that they have fresh evidence about their proposed experimental treatment", a hospital spokesman said, according to the BBC.

Hirano will be able to make the case for his treatment to hospital specialists next week; however, The Telegraph reported that the British specialists believe that the treatment is merely experimental, and will not help.

His parents appealed all the way to the Supreme Court but lost but on July 7 GOSH applied for a fresh hearing at the High Court. And ten percent is a "conservative" estimate - the doctor said Charlie's chances of improvement are as high as 56 percent.

Grant Armstrong, the barrister who is acting, unpaid, for Charlie's parents, has persuaded the High Court that Ms Yates should be allowed to attend the meeting. He's now on a ventilator from which Great Ormond Street Hospital officials want to remove him against his parents' wishes.

But the judge said Charlie must not be transferred to the USA without the court's prior permission. Charlie's parents had initially sought to take their son to the United States for the experimental treatment.

They said the aim of the meeting was to allow medical experts to have a detailed scientific discussion.

"We are delighted that Charlie'smother, Connie, will be present at the meeting that Prof".
