It has been almost six months since Peter Capaldi announced he would be stepping down as the Doctor on the 30 January - almost the longest duration between a Doctor announcing his departure and his successor being revealed.

The BBC has announced the identity of the new Doctor - the 13th Time lord in the show's history - will be confirmed on BBC One after Saturday's Wimbledon Men's final.

The actor is set to take over from Peter Capaldi this December in the Christmas special, which will be the final episode for Capaldi and series showrunner Steven Moffat.

A trailer featuring the number 13 in different locations was aired during the tennis on BBC One on Friday. A large number of actors have been rumored as possible replacements for Capaldi, including Love Actually star Kris Marshall and Phoebe Waller-Bridge from the TV show, Fleabag. Jodie Whittaker, who rose to fame in Broadchurch, and Tilda Swinton, who won a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2008 for her performance in Michael Clayton, have also been touted as possible contenders. The actor admitted last week that his regeneration as the Time Lord will be "more complicated than recent ones" in an interview with the Radio Times.

Corruption Conviction Overturned for Ex-NY Assembly Speaker
He represented the 65th Assembly District for decades before being forced to relinquish his position after the conviction. He was forced to vacate the Assembly seat he'd held for nearly 40 years, and sentenced to 12 years in federal prison.

Capaldi is stepping down this Christmas in a special episode which also stars David Bradley as the First Doctor, originally played by William Hartnell between 1963-66.

Fans took to Twitter to share their excitement at the upcoming announcement.

Translated into real time, the Wimbledon final begins at 2pm and is expected to last 2 to 3 hours. Now it's just going to be a few more days until we see if any of those rumours will play out, or if our next Doctor is an entirely new face.
