Marco Rubio Wants to Crack Down on Businesses Helping North Korea

  • China trading more with North Korea but buying less coal

The bigger Chinese banks will be left alone, for now. Two days after, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that the United States was prepared to use the full range of capabilities, including military options, to defend the country and its allies against North Korea. The sanctions are meant to apply meaningful pressure on a government which is all but single-handedly propping up a regime that threatens South Korea, Japan, and the United States with nuclear destruction.

North Korea has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States and last week tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile, which experts said could hit all of Alaska and parts of the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

President Trump and administration officials have grown increasingly irritated that China has not done more to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missiles programs, despite public pressure from the U.S.

In spite of Trump's likely frustration with China, Trump called its president a "friend" and "great leader", for whom he had "great respect".

But Beijing, as it has in the past, largely resisted Trump's demands.

This would enable precision strikes against North Korea's immediate neighbors, including South Korea and Japan, but not the USA, which is over 5,000 miles from the North Korean coast. Almost two-thirds of Americans (64%) say the USA should use military force to defend its allies in Asia in the event that they get into a serious military conflict with North Korea. Trump even tweeted that they had an "excellent" meeting. He referred to "tough pressures" that China faces in its relationship with North Korea.

While preparations for fresh sanctions are moving forward, tangible new steps by China could prompt Washington to put the measures on hold, the USA sources said. "They've had numerous wars with Korea".

The U.N. sanctions do not include goods intended for ordinary people and those for humanitarian reasons. "With the development of local air defense radar and the [Command Control and Alert] C2A system, we are able to more effectively carry out missions".

On Wednesday, China's foreign ministry bristled at questions about ongoing trade with Pyongyang that seems to skirt United Nations sanctions meant to isolate the regime - and reiterated its hostility to broader economic sanctions. "UN Security Council sanctions are not a total ban on shipments". However in February China said it would halt purchases until the end of the year, in compliance with Security Council resolutions over the North's nuclear program.
