Liu Xiaobo, who was an internationally renowned literary critic, writer, human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, died in the First Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang, northern China, on Thursday after German and American specialists failed to save him.

In 2010, while he was in prison, the Nobel committee awarded Liu the peace prize for "his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China" - a move that infuriated Beijing.

His doctors said that Liu Xia was by her husband's side when the moment finally came.

Germany had said it was prepared to welcome Liu for medical treatment after he was transferred from prison to hospital after a terminal liver cancer diagnosis.

Beijing had ignored global calls for Liu to be allowed to seek treatment overseas after he was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer in May, apparently fearing he would use his final days of freedom to denounce its authoritarian rule.

"I call on the Chinese government to release Liu Xia from house arrest and allow her to depart China, according to her wishes".

"Mr. Liu dedicated his life to intellectual discovery, the pursuit of freedom and the protection of human rights in China", Freeland said in her official statement.

The hospital says Liu, China's most prominent political prisoner, has respiratory failure and his condition is now life threatening.

"CHRD urges the worldwide community to do everything possible to free Liu Xia, Liu Xiaobo's wife and the love of his life", the group said in a statement on its website.

"If we don't join the students in the square and face the same kind of danger, then we don't have any right to speak", Xiaobo was quoted by Hou.

"That's why the Committee I chaired awarded #Liu Xiaobo the Peace Price (sic)", he added.

In a harshly worded English-language editorial published Friday by the nationalistic tabloid the Global Times, the state-run newspaper painted Liu as "a victim led astray by West".

As Liu Xiaobo remained behind bars until recently, Liu Xia, 56, had paid a heavy price for simply being his wife.

Xia, a poet, is a veteran of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, which pitched for democracy in the one-party political system of China.

Xiaobo would spend the next three decades in and out of prison until his death from liver cancer while serving an 11 year sentence for "subversion".

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in a statement issued after Liu Xiaobo's death on Thursday, appealed for his widow's release. Liu died after a battle with cancer, remaining in custody until the end as officials rebuffed worldwide pleas to let the prominent dissident receive treatment overseas.

"There are only two words to describe how we feel right now: grief and fury", family friend and activist Wu Yangwei, better known by his penname Ye Du, said by phone.

Cruz recalled that Liu's name had been at the top of a list of signatories of Charter 08 - "a manifesto that shined a light on the Communist Party of China and its totalitarian abuse of power". In the same statement Liu had prepared for his trial, he addressed his wife.

China responded by lodging "stern representations" with countries that made remarks about Liu Xiaobo, including the United States, expressing its firm opposition, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a regular briefing. He is the first Nobel Peace Prize victor to die in state custody since 1938, when German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky died after years in Nazi Germany's concentration camps.

China signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in 1998 but took care never to ratify it. Harassment and acts of violence against civil rights activists and citizen-journalists have increased since 2013, when Xi Jinping took over as president. "He was a very calm person", Liu said.
