Dow ends at 2nd straight record ahead of bank earnings

Companies in the S&P 500 are expected to report an increase of six percent in operating earnings per share compared with the year-ago period, according to CFRA Research.

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen told a Senate panel on Thursday that it would be "quite challenging" for U.S. growth to reach a three-per cent target set by President Donald Trump. Big-dividend stocks like utilities and real estate companies rose as bond yields fell.

The benchmark index climbed 123.07 points, or 0.6%, to 21,532.14.

The Russell 2000 is up 12.98 points, or 0.9 percent.

Stocks wrestled to a healthy finish Thursday in a session where early gains were dented by Senate testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index added 1.1% to 6,261.17.
